Most people these days are coming around to the idea that we all need to do our part when it comes to using greener and more renewable forms of energy. Of course, the savings that can be made over time by using renewable energy sources is a nice incentive too.
While more and more new build homes are incorporating renewable energy systems into the architectural design, it can be difficult to know exactly how to apply energy generating technology to an existing property.
Running your home with renewable energy
There is more than one option for anyone who wants to run their home with a renewable energy source. One of the most popular is the installation of Solar PV panels on to a roof top ideally which faces a southerly direction, but East and Westerly facing solar panels are also effective. The electricity generated by the solar panels can be used for running your domestic appliances, storage heaters or heating hot water, thus lowering your electricity bills.
A nice bonus of using solar electric panels is the Feed-in Tariff, which is a scheme guaranteed by the government which enables both businesses and homes to receive a payment for every unit of power they produce, a further benefit is that a payment is made for selling surplus power back to the grid too.
Another option is to use an air source heat pump system, which is one of the most energy efficient methods of supplying your home with heat and hot water.
How air source heat pumps work
Air source heat pumps (ASHPs) absorb heat from the outside air. This heat can then be used to heat radiators, underfloor heating systems and hot water in your home. An air source heat pump extracts heat from the outside air in the same way that a fridge extracts heat from its inside. It can get heat from the air even when the temperature is as low as -15° C. Heat pumps have some impact on the environment as they need electricity to run, but the heat they extract from the ground, air, or water is constantly being renewed naturally.
Heat from the air is absorbed at low temperature into a fluid. This fluid then passes through a compressor where its temperature is increased, and transfers its higher temperature heat to the heating and hot water circuits of the house.
