UK’s First Battery Powered Hotel
A 200-room Premier Inn in Edinburgh has claimed to be the country’s first battery-powered hotel. The Gyle at Edinburgh Park has recently installed an energy storage battery weighing five tonnes. It charges from the national grid during off-peak periods to power the hotel during peak tariff times, saving significant money.
The lithium ion battery measures three metres cubed and could reduce the hotel’s annual energy bills by up to £20,000. A two-hour charge can power the entire hotel for up to three hours.
Lithium Ion Battery Power Systems
The Premier Inn may be the first hotel, but it is not the first business using similar energy storage systems. The DIY and home improvement retailer B&Q use an energy storage battery at its Swindon distribution centre. The battery works in conjunction with their solar power units to maximise their use of renewable energy.
Environmental services firm, Veolia, also use a lithium ion battery to help improve the performance of its high temperature incinerator.
Cian Hatton, Head of Energy and Environment at Premier Inn’s parent company Whitbread, said of his company’s own battery-powered hotel:
“Batteries are of course everyday items, more commonly associated with powering small household goods like the TV remote control, so it is incredibly exciting to launch the UK’s first battery-powered hotel – an innovation which will save money, ensure security of supply and support the transition to a more flexible grid.”
Energy Storage ‘Balances Supply and Provides Flexibility’
The hotel’s new battery storage technology was installed by energy supplier E.ON. The firm will also manage the battery’s workload and measure its energy efficiency from its Glasgow-based management centre.
E.ON’s Customer Accounts Director, Richard Oakley, said the Gyle Premier Inn was already an energy efficient hotel. He said this energy efficiency was due to the remote monitoring and management of its systems from E.ON’s control centre.
Mr Oakley also said that,
“By adding the flexibility of battery storage we can also help Whitbread to upgrade to the full board option of drawing electricity from the grid when prices are low, storing that energy for use at peak times and having the ability to sell it back to the grid to help balance supply and demand on the network.”
Large Energy Users Urged to Follow Hotel’s Example
It was also said that this lithium ion battery storage model should serve as a good example for other businesses. Other hotels and operations that use a lot of energy should follow suit to save money and reduce their carbon footprint.
Mr Oakley added,
“Premier Inn is showing how hotel chains and large power users can further save money, reduce their carbon footprint and support the development of a lower-carbon, smarter energy grid in the UK.”

Solar panels for domestic or commercial properties are also using a similar energy storage system. They can save excess energy in a battery instead of feeding it back to the grid. The stored energy can then be used only when it is needed, thus maximising the efficiency of solar PV systems.
