Jack Nicholas has spent the last 4 weeks at Caplor, on a placement organised in conjunction with Warwick IN-Place. We are pleased to announce that we have extended Jack’s internship, due to the high quality of his research.
You can read Jack’s reflections below.
Over the past month I worked for Caplor Energy in a research capacity aimed at reviewing a potential new technology the company was considering investing in. As an internship I viewed this as a chance to gain new skills and insight into the working environment which, having spent the last few years in academia, I had little prior experience of.
From day one I was treated as one of the family, which not only completely alleviated any nerves I had but, as time progressed, made me feel at ease asking questions or seeking advice. It was refreshing to be in part of a company that valued the input of every member of staff that worked there.
As I worked from home for a large portion of the project I often had to rely on e-mail or direct phone contact to overcome any hurdles I faced that required information from Caplor themselves. In these instances I never had to wait long before my phone call was returned or my e-mail addressed, which from the perspective of someone working to a tight deadline, was invaluable. Not only would they on many cases any query directly, but on frequent occasions they would go above and beyond to make sure I had all the information I may need.
One of the highlights of the project for me was the construction of the costings section. This drew together a large majority of the research I had undergone and so was a key area of debate. Over the course of a week constant discussions were held and revisions made until eventually we came to a consensus. I thoroughly enjoyed this process and, though at times it was tedious, it was perhaps the most beneficial learning experience from the placement as a whole.
From the brief time I spent with the company Caplor came across as a young, dynamic and fresh business with a finger firmly on the pulse of the renewable energy sector. Though short, I enjoyed my internship immensely and have benefited greatly from the experience.
